Cancer Treatments May Cause Hearing Loss

Beating cancer is a cause for celebration.

On the first Sunday of June each year, cancer survivors, and their friends and families, come together to celebrate the battle that was fought, and won, against cancer.

It’s a wonderful time to celebrate.

But, it’s also a time to remind people of the challenges cancer survivors may still face.

One of those challenges may be hearing loss.

Unfortunately, many of the drugs and therapies used to treat cancers can damage cochlear hair cells in the inner ear which leads to hearing loss.

Of course the good news is that if you have some hearing loss, there are ways I can help you hear and communicate better!

And, dealing with a hearing loss will be a piece of cake compared to fighting cancer!

Come in for a hearing screening, if there is an issue, we can work together to find the right hearing help for you!

Is A Daily Cup of Coffee Bad For Your Hearing?

Do you love to drink coffee in the morning or throughout your day?

If so, this new study may be of interest to you.

The study found that daily coffee intake may actually prevent you from recovering from short term hearing loss.

The study was conducted by researchers from McGill University.

Researchers found evidence to suggest that caffeine can impede the ability to recover from short term hearing loss, the type of hearing loss you may experience after a concert or other loud events.

Short term hearing loss which is called auditory temporary threshold shift, is usually reversible within 72 hours after the event.

But, according to researchers, this ability for your hearing to rebound may be inhibited by the consumption of caffeine.

The researchers did their research on guinea pigs, so there is some question as to whether or not these findings will be the same for humans.

Researchers took two groups of guinea pigs, one group was given caffeine prior to exposure to loud sounds and the other group was not.

After 8 days the researchers found that the group of guinea pigs that had consumed caffeine prior to the loud noise event had not recovered their hearing while the other group of guinea pigs, the ones that didn’t consume caffeine, had recovered their hearing.

Does this mean you should give up your daily coffee?

With such preliminary findings, I don’t think I would give up coffee quite yet.

But, I suppose it couldn’t hurt to avoid caffeine if you’re going to a concert!
